If you are looking for the pinnacle in waterproofing protection, a combination of spray foam and coatings could be exactly what you seek.
Each offers different benefits to your building, and they are easily combined to truly protect your valuable business, employees, inventory, and customers alike.
Spray Foam
SPF, or spray polyurethane foam, is a wonderful roofing system option. The foam consists of two (2) separate liquids. When the liquids are mixed in the spraying process, an exothermic (heat-releasing) chemical reaction occurs. This leads to the formation of a foam.
The foam expands up to 20 times the initial volume. As it expands, the liquid foam seeps into all types of imperfects, cracks, holes, or other damage. The expansion fills the area completely.
As the foam continues to fully dry, a hard, seamless, water-proof layer is left behind protecting your entire roofing area.
Like coatings, the foam is sprayed over flashings, and up the sides of various protrusions to seal all areas of potential leak development.
Unlike coatings, spray foam has an exceedingly high R-factor. In fact, it offers the highest R-factor of any roofing system option currently on the market.
The U.S Department of Energy defines R-factor as, “An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value — the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness.” Conklin SPF offers a whopping value of R-5 per inch!
For comparison, 1” of plywood offers a R-1 value. 1” of spray-in fiberglass insulation runs from R-3.1 to R-3.4, depending on manufacturer. In our area, the Department of Energy recommends a minimum total insulating factor of R-4 or higher.
The insulating properties of spray foam not only keep your building cooler in the summer, but also warmer in the winter, reducing thermal fluctuations year around. As a special bonus, it offers noise reduction benefits as well.
Add a Coating!
For even more protection and savings, consider adding a topcoat to your SPF roofing system. Depending on the coating material, it serves to protect the foam from potential debris damage, UV degradation and allows for increased reflectivity, reducing those cooling costs even more.
As a coating is more easily applied initially, re-application is also quicker and less expensive than fully re-foaming your roof. This leads to lower maintenance costs down the road and, once again, increased savings and a higher return on your investment.
